Of vital importance to the development of English drama was the entrance of the first actresses upon the English stage. April De Angelis has taken five actresses – Nell Gwynn, Elizabeth Farley, Rebecca Marshall, Doll Common and Mary Betterton – and given us a fascinating look at the precarious lot of actresses in the Restoration period.
The play is set in the late 1660s, when theatres were re-opened after 17 years of Puritan suppression and the first English actresses were allowed on stage. The action takes place in the dressing-room, on stage and in the street outside.
A moving and often comic account of a true story, with comedy, pathos and vulgar slang.
