A ‘musical fable’ loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. With a cast of over thirty actors of all ages, ‘Gypsy’ was a wonderful Apollo musical. If you were unlucky enough not to get a ticket, the photos can still be viewed for a short time.

Gypsy is a ‘musical fable’ loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist. It casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life as it follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform on stage. It was the second Broadway smash hit for Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents, who wrote the book (and yet another success for composer Jule Styne).
A tale of the decline of vaudeville and of a domineering mother’s inadvertent creation of a burlesque stripper, ‘Gypsy’ contains many songs that became popular standards, including ‘Small World,’ ‘Everything’s Coming up Roses’, ‘Some People’, ‘Let Me Entertain You’ and ‘Rose’s Turn’. It is often considered one of the crowning achievements of the mid-20th century’s conventional musical theatre art form, often called the ‘book musical’, and has been referred to as the greatest American musical by numerous critics and writers.
